Health and Safety Policy – this policy provides an overarching view of the legal regulatory and organisational framework of our Health and Safety Policy.   It details the accountabilities of the Executive office, the Health and Safety Officer, senior managers, other staff,  and contractors/ visitors to the school.

The main instrument of this policy are the various records and scheduled checks and assessments which the policy requires.  These are contained in key files held in the offices of the school at Samways House.   These are: the H&S records files, the fire plan files, the premises files and the onsite locations risk assessments.  The risk management system (RMS) covers the assessment of risk from the user perspective.   The risk assessment and safety of buildings Inaura maintains is  which are separately maintained from the operational RMS.

Inaura Risk management system – this system which is maintained on a secure online server, provides a robust and comprehensive approach to risk management. For Inaura school’s environment and ethos.  The system ensures that every combination of student(s), activity, and location are specifically considered, that the competency requirements of both staff and students to do those activities are clear and explicit, and that the relevant risk assessments must have been read before the activity can go ahead.

Food and Hygiene Policy -  Our food hygiene policy is currently being updated
All staff must hold a basic food hygiene certificate and receive sufficient training to apply the catering and food hygiene policy appropriately before providing cooking activities to the student. This policy is under review.     We have recently identified a need to make the distinction between preparing food for the students to eat and providing cooking activities for students more explicit and detailing competency standards for staff.

First aid and medication policy and Medical needs policy – This policy details outlines how adequate First Aid provision will be ensured at Inaura School. The policy also looks at the safe storage and administration of medicines. The guidance is designed to help the school develop policies on managing medicines, and to put in place effective management systems to support individual children with medical needs. Positive responses by Inaura to a child’s medical needs will not only benefit the child directly, but can also positively influence the attitude of their peers.

Substance misuse policy - We aim to promote health and awareness associated with drug related issues and to create a climate of support, confidence and fulfilment in which drug misuse is unlikely to flourish.  We are aware of the drug climate within our community and our intention is to prevent our young people being involved and/or to postpone experimentation to a later date and to protect those young people for whom drug use is not an issue.

Smoking policy - we aim to be a health promoting organisation which protects young people, staff and visitors from the effects of tobacco smoke.  We will raise awareness of the dangers of smoking through our PSHE programmes.   Inaura complies with the Health Act (2006), which bans smoking in all workplaces and enclosed public places, National Healthy Schools and Every Child Matters. The School recognises that tobacco can become a coping mechanism for some students and will work towards supporting those students to develop alternative strategies for coping.

Lone working policy
Lead SMT  Headteacher
Review date  Termly in 2011-2012
Lone working is part of normal practice at Inaura school  - the nature of our provision requires this. Where associated education provision for our students require staff to work alone, both the individual staff member and Senior Management Team have a duty of care to assess and reduce the risks which lone working presents. There are many issues which arise in responding safely to this. We are making our lone-working our priority development activity for the remainder of 2011 and will work with staff to extend and strengthen our lone-working safeguarding practice.
